
- Iron and Clay—Mingled Churchcraft and Statecraft—We have come to a time when God’s sacred work is represented by the feet of the image in which the iron was mixed with the miry clay. God has a people, a chosen people, whose discernment must be sanctified, who must not become unholy by laying upon the foundation wood, hay, and stubble. Every soul who is loyal to the commandments of God will see that the distinguishing feature of our faith is the seventh-day Sabbath. If the government would honor the Sabbath as God has commanded, it would stand in the strength of God and in defense of the faith once delivered to the saints. But statesmen will uphold the spurious sabbath, and will mingle their religious faith with the observance of this child of the papacy, placing it above the Sabbath which the Lord has sanctified and blessed, setting it apart for man to keep holy, as a sign between Him and His people to a thousand generations.The mingling of churchcraft and statecraft is represented by the iron and the clay. This union is weakening all the power of the churches. This investing the church with the power of the state will bring evil results. Men have almost passed the point of God’s forbearance. They have invested their strength in politics, and have united with the papacy. But the time will come when God will punish those who have made void His law, and their evil work will recoil upon themselves (Manuscript 63, 1899).

但以理书第2章是圣经预言的大纲。金、银、铜、铁、泥的大像,和非人手凿出来的石头。大像的各个部分分别有所指,以此为基础,大像成为一个整体,大像作为一个整体有它的含义,石头是打碎整个像。
作为大像的部分,金、银、铜、铁,分别预表巴比伦、玛代波斯、希腊和罗马帝国;半铁半泥的脚和脚指头,象征从中世纪到末后的政教联合的教皇权。
大像作为一个整体,代表末后复辟的教皇权,继承并综合了巴比伦、玛代波斯、希腊和罗马帝国的特性,而且世界的列王(十王)在政教联合中以教皇为首领,形成反叛上帝律法的联盟。
启示录第17章的内容,与但以理书第2章,彼此对照、相互解释。七头十角兽,和“同着羔羊的,就是蒙召、被选、有忠心的”。七头、十角分别有所指,但七头十角兽是一个整体,象征末后复辟的教皇权。七头就是之前依次出现的七位王,教皇权复辟成为第八位,十角就是同心合意、以教皇权为首领的十王。
当改正教的权势美国(第七位),将自己的势力范围交给教皇权(第八位)时,就会出现普世性的联盟,各国(十王)以教皇权为首领、将能力权柄归给他。
但以理书2章“非人手凿出来的石头”,对应启示录17章,正是“同着羔羊的,就是蒙召、被选、有忠心的”。圣经预言了最后的危机与战争中——谁会得胜——思考这一点,比针对预言解释的细节差异而争论不休,要重要得多!
Chapter 17

Deceiver of All Nations—In the seventeenth of Revelation is foretold the destruction of all the churches who corrupt themselves by idolatrous devotion to the service of the papacy, those who have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. Thus is represented the papal power, which with all deceivableness of unrighteousness, by outside attraction and gorgeous display, deceives all nations; promising them, as did Satan our first parents, all good to those who receive its mark, and all harm to those who oppose its fallacies. The power which has the deepest inward corruption will make the greatest display, and will clothe itself with the most elaborate signs of power. The Bible plainly declares that this covers a corrupt and deceiving wickedness. “Upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, The Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth.”

What is it that gives its kingdom to this power? Protestantism, a power which, while professing to have the temper and spirit of a lamb and to be allied to Heaven, speaks with the voice of a dragon. It is moved by a power from beneath (Letter 232, 1899).

13, 14 (chs. 13:11-17; 16:13-16). A Confederacy of Satan’s Forces—[Revelation 17:13, 14 quoted.] “These have one mind.” There will be a universal bond of union, one great harmony, a confederacy of Satan’s forces. “And shall give their power and strength unto the beast.” Thus is manifested the same arbitrary, oppressive power against religious liberty, freedom to worship God according to the dictates of conscience, as was manifested by the papacy, when in the past it persecuted those who dared to refuse to conform with the religious rites and ceremonies of Romanism.
13,14(见启13:13-17;16:15-16)撒但势力的同盟-—[引启17:13-14]“他们同心合意”。将有一个普世的联合,就是撒但权势的同盟出现,“将自己的能力权柄给那兽”。于是就对信仰自由,就是人按照良心的指示敬拜上帝的自由实施逼迫和压制,正如过去罗马教对胆敢拒绝实行教会仪式和礼节的人所实施的逼迫一样。

In the warfare to be waged in the last days there will be united, in opposition to God’s people, all the corrupt powers that have apostatized from allegiance to the law of Jehovah. In this warfare the Sabbath of the fourth commandment will be the great point at issue; for in the Sabbath commandment the great Lawgiver identifies Himself as the Creator of the heavens and the earth (Manuscript 24, 1891).

- Christ Glorified in the Last Crisis—As Christ was glorified on the day of Pentecost, so will He again be glorified in the closing work of the gospel, when He shall prepare a people to stand the final test, in the closing conflict of the great controversy (The Review and Herald, November 29, 1892).

As we approach the last crisis, it is of vital moment that harmony and unity exist among the Lord’s instrumentalities. The world is filled with storm and war and variance. Yet under one head—the papal power—the people will unite to oppose God in the person of His witnesses.
当我们临近最后危机的时候,主的机构之间的协调是非常重要的。世界虽然充满骚乱,战争和矛盾,但众人终必在一个首领,即罗马教的势力之下联合起来,反对上帝的见证人,藉以反对上帝。

Said the angel of the Lord: “The holy city shall they tread underfoot forty and two months. And I will give power unto My two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth…. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified…. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. And after three days and a half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.” Revelation 11:2-11.

The periods here mentioned—“forty and two months,” and “a thousand two hundred and threescore days”—are the same, alike representing the time in which the church of Christ was to suffer oppression from Rome. The 1260 years of papal supremacy began in A.D. 538, and would therefore terminate in 1798. (See Appendix note for page 54.) At that time a French army entered Rome and made the pope a prisoner, and he died in exile. Though a new pope was soon afterward elected, the papal hierarchy has never since been able to wield the power which it before possessed.

“They shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and three-score days, clothed in sackcloth.” During the greater part of this period, God’s witnesses remained in a state of obscurity. The papal power sought to hide from the people the word of truth, and set before them false witnesses to contradict its testimony. (See Appendix.) When the Bible was proscribed by religious and secular authority; when its testimony was perverted, and every effort made that men and demons could invent to turn the minds of the people from it; when those who dared proclaim its sacred truths were hunted, betrayed, tortured, buried in dungeon cells, martyred for their faith, or compelled to flee to mountain fastnesses, and to dens and caves of the earth—then the faithful witnesses prophesied in sackcloth. Yet they continued their testimony throughout the entire period of 1260 years. In the darkest times there were faithful men who loved God’s word and were jealous for His honor. To these loyal servants were given wisdom, power, and authority to declare His truth during the whole of this time.

“When they shall have finished [are finishing] their testimony.” The period when the two witnesses were to prophesy clothed in sackcloth, ended in 1798. As they were approaching the termination of their work in obscurity, war was to be made upon them by the power represented as “the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit.” In many of the nations of Europe the powers that ruled in church and state had for centuries been controlled by Satan through the medium of the papacy. But here is brought to view a new manifestation of satanic power.

It had been Rome’s policy, under a profession of reverence for the Bible, to keep it locked up in an unknown tongue and hidden away from the people. Under her rule the witnesses prophesied “clothed in sackcloth.” But another power—the beast from the bottomless pit—was to arise to make open, avowed war upon the word of God.
罗马教的政策一向是在自称尊崇《圣经》的掩护之下,把《圣经》保留在一种多数人所不懂的语言之中,这无异是把《圣经》锁封起来,使众人无从获得。在她的统治之下,这两个见证人“穿着毛衣”传道。但另有一个权势──从无底坑里上来的兽──要兴起来,公然与上帝的《圣经》争战。
“The great city” in whose streets the witnesses are slain, and where their dead bodies lie, is “spiritually” Egypt. Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt most boldly denied the existence of the living God and resisted His commands. No monarch ever ventured upon more open and highhanded rebellion against the authority of Heaven than did the king of Egypt. When the message was brought him by Moses, in the name of the Lord, Pharaoh proudly answered: “Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.” Exodus 5:2, A.R.V. This is atheism, and the nation represented by Egypt would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God and would manifest a like spirit of unbelief and defiance. “The great city” is also compared, “spiritually,” to Sodom. The corruption of Sodom in breaking the law of God was especially manifested in licentiousness. And this sin was also to be a pre-eminent characteristic of the nation that should fulfill the specifications of this scripture.

According to the words of the prophet, then, a little before the year 1798 some power of satanic origin and character would rise to make war upon the Bible. And in the land where the testimony of God’s two witnesses should thus be silenced, there would be manifest the atheism of the Pharaoh and the licentiousness of Sodom.
按照先知的话,到了接近一七九八年的时候,将有从撒但而来并与其性质相同的权势兴起与《圣经》作战。在那地,上帝两个见证人的声音因此寂静下来,那里要出现法老的无神主义和所多玛的淫乱行为。
This prophecy has received a most exact and striking fulfillment in the history of France.
这段预言已经在法国的历史上很准确而显著地应验了。
“The beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.” The atheistical power that ruled in France during the Revolution and the Reign of Terror, did wage such a war against God and His holy word as the world had never witnessed.
“那从无底坑里上来的兽,必与他们交战,并且得胜,把他们杀了。”在大革命和恐怖时代中统治法国的无神主义政权确是与上帝和祂的圣经作战,是世人从来没有见过的。
In France arose an atheistical power that openly declared war against the authority of Heaven.
在法国兴起了无神论的权势,向天上的权威公开宣战。
Terrible were the scenes enacted in France when atheism became the controlling power.
当无神主义在法国得势之后,所演出的惨剧是非常可怕的。
the world-wide dissemination of the same teachings that led to the French Revolution—all are tending to involve the whole world in a struggle similar to that which convulsed France.
导致法国革命的理论在普世的传播——这一切都将把全世界卷入一场类似于曾震撼法国的大冲突。
这一段预言中表号的线索在启示录第十二章里,就是那在基督降生时要毁灭祂的龙。这条龙指撒但(启12:9),他曾鼓动希律王设法害死救主。后来在基督教初期的两百年中,撒但所用来打击基督和祂的子民的,就是罗马帝国,在这个帝国中,异教盛行,所以那龙一方面代表撒但,同时也代表信奉异教的罗马国。

但这个两角象羊羔的兽,却是“从地中上来”的。这一个国家既不是由于征服别的国家而兴起的,就必是在未曾有人占领过的疆士上渐渐而和平地成长起来的。她不可能在人烟稠密和邦国纷争的旧世界──即“多民、多人、多国、多方”的波涛汹涌之海──中兴起。她必是在新大陆出现的。
在公元一七九八年,新大陆上兴起了哪一个强盛伟大,并博得世人注意的国家呢?这个表号在此可以肯定下来了。有一个国家,而且只有这一个国家,应验了预言中所提出的各种特点,那就是美利坚合众国。许多历史家和演说家,也常在不知不觉中一再采用了《圣经》的口吻,几乎可以说是原文的字眼,来形容美国的兴起与成长。《圣经》中提到这个兽是“从地中上来。”这里所用的“上来“一词,据许多的译经家说:其原文字义乃是“像一棵植物生长出来。”再者,照我们先前所指出的,该国必须是在先前没有人占领过的疆土中兴起。有一位著名的作家形容美国的兴起,说,“她从荒凉之地神秘地出现,”又说,“我国好像一粒无声无息的种子,生长成为一个大国。”(注二) 在一八五零年,欧洲有一个杂志提到美国为一个伟大的国家,说,“在寂静之地出现,权力与光荣日见增长。”(注三)艾福勒特在一次演说中,提到美国的创业先祖们,说:“他们岂是仅仅来寻找一片净土,以便归隐,不遭人的侵犯,而在遥远偏僻的地方,生活安全,使这小小的来顿教会可以享受信仰自由的权利吗?看哪,他们在和平的征服中,竟得了这么一片大地,……竖起了十字架的旌旗。”(注四)
这兽“有两角如同羊羔。”这如同羊羔的两角象征着青春、纯洁、与柔和,这正是先知看见美国在一七九八年“上来”时的情形。那些最先逃到美国去的基督徒,原要寻找一个避难所,以便脱离君王的压迫和神父的残害。因此他们便决定,在政治自由与宗教自由的基础上建立一个政府。在美国的独立宣言中,便说明了这伟大的真理:“人人皆属平等,”并赋有不可侵犯之“求生存、求自由、和求幸福”的权利。而且宪法也保证人民有自治的权利,由公众投票,推选代表来制定并执行律法。同时也承认人民有宗教信仰的自由,容许人人本着良心的指示去敬拜上帝。共和主义与改正教主义便成了国家的基本原则,这些原则就成了该国权势和繁荣的秘诀。凡是基督教界中遭受压迫和蹂躏的人,无不怀着关注与希望的心情来到该地,千万的人奔赴它的海岸,于是美利坚合众国便兴起而跻于地上列强之林了。
但这个“两角如同羊羔”的兽却“说话好像龙。它在头一个兽面前,施行头一个兽所有的权柄;并且叫地和住在地上的人,拜那死伤医好的头一个兽。……就迷惑住在地上的人,说:要给那受刀伤还活着的兽作个像。”(启13:11-14)
表号中有两角如同羊羔,说话好像龙。表明这个国家在其主张与行动之间存在着的惊人矛盾。一个国家的“说话”就是该国立法与司法当局的行动。藉着这种行动,它就把先前提出作为国家政治基础的自由与和平的原则推翻了。预言中说到它“说话好像龙,”并且要“施行头一个兽所有的权柄,”这明显地预言到这个国家要发展一种偏狭和逼迫的精神,正如那龙与像豹的兽所代表的国家一样。预言中又提到这两角如同羊羔的兽,要“叫地和住在地上的人,拜那死伤医好的头一个兽。”这是说明这个国家当局将要强迫人民遵守某一条法令,这法令就是一种敬拜教皇的行为。
这种行动对于立国的原则,对于自由公正的制度,以及率直而严肃的独立宣言和国家宪法,都是直接相反的。美国的创立者贤明地设法防止教会利用政治的势力,及其必然的结果,就是偏狭和逼迫的事,所以在宪法上制定了:“国家不得制定有关设立宗教或禁止行使宗教权利的法律,”并且“不得以任何宗教信仰作为美国公务员的必备资格。”由此可见政府当局唯有在公然破坏这些保障人民自由权利的法令之后,才能强迫实行这有关宗教礼节的事。但是主义与行动之间的矛盾,也正是预言表号中所披露的。那说话像龙的也正是那自称是纯洁、温和、与驯良而有两角如同羊羔的兽。
七月四日 预言中的美国
“我又看见另有一个兽从地中上来,有两角如同羊羔,说话好象龙”(启13:11)。〖15〗
有一个国家,而且只有这一个国家,应验了预言中所提出的各种特点,那就是美利坚合众国。(GC 440){Mar 193.1}〖16〗

启示录11章预言的从无底坑里上来的兽,是在中世纪教皇权之后、从法国大革命中兴起的无神主义权势,是中世纪教皇权在1798年完结之时出现的撒旦权势的新的表现。
启示录13章的重点是预言中的美国。罗马教皇承袭罗马帝国,中世纪1260年的掌权期到公元1798年为止,届时,便“似乎是受了死伤”。在教皇权死伤之后、直到复辟成为最后的“第八位”的阶段当中,不仅有无神主义权势的兴衰,也有美国的出现和变质。法国大革命,催生了无神主义政权。几乎同时发生的是美国的独立,但美国在1798年“上来”时的情形,乃是以共和主义和改正教主义为国家基本原则,成为上帝子民的避难所。唯有当美国在仇敌的阴谋破坏之下,发展一种逼迫和偏狭的精神,公然破坏保障人民自由权利的法令,由立法机构强迫人遵守星期日,美国就举国背道,并为教皇权的暴政复兴开辟道路。
